I'd guess that the database was shut down with a shutdown abort and smon is busy recovering.

After re-starting the database, the db application seems really slow after looking into it smon seems to be taking up 50% of the cpu !!

What is smon doing , is there any way to get around this ??

I have tried leaving it for a while !
