the default of 50 for pctincrease, like the (before 8.1.6) default block size for database creation of 2k is legacy.

It harkens back to the "olden days" when you couldn't have lots of extents or autoextend.

I'd be much more likely to change the maxextents parameter on the SYSTEM tables or to put autoextend on the datafiles in the SYSTEM tablespace.
