It doesn't. But then it's faster than Oracle to start with.

Oracle will _always_ be able to beat MySQL at the top end. But MySQL can (nearly) always beat Oracle at the bottom end. It's in the middle that things get tricky and many other issues come into play.

Oracle is much better at spreading IO over multiple disks with fine granularity, and much better at data caching (MySQL basically only does index caching - part of it's approach to reliability.)

Better? Probably not. But there's a sufficent API and, of course, a Perl DBI driver :)

I'd certainly recommend that they look at it. It is *free* after all. That means that money you save by not buying Oracle licences can go into more hardware :)

I really don't want to get into any big debate about the pros and cons of MySQL. It's certainly has it's faults, just like Oracle. Looked at with an Oracle mindset it'll probably look too basic. But as with all such issues, people need to try it for themselves.
