Managing dblinks/synonyms across DEV/QA/PROD db environments

Does anyone have a good URL, paper, book that talks about best practices when it comes to use of db links, synonyms when you've got multiple db environments such as dev/qa/prod?

For example, is it a no-no to create views with db links?

Is there an alternative?

Or do you create different views (each with different db links), and then use a synonym to point to a particular view? the synonym pointing to the appropriate view, depending on the environment?

Can views be created with synonyms, for example?

TIA,
Gerardo
