I haven't done it with the REFERENCES privilige but with others the following will work:  

  1. create the same user account with the same password in the other database.
  2. grant the appropriate permissions to that user.
  3. refer to the table with @servicename or create a synonym with the @servicename notation. When the user refers to the object the username/password from the current instance will be passed to the other instance.

I am trying to GRANT REFERENCES on a table that resides on a different database, on a different server. Is this possible and how do I go about doing it.
