NOTE: Upgrading to 8i on HP/UX

Just a note that will interest those who are upgrading to 8i on HP/UX. Metalink Doc ID 102557.1 says that as of 8.1, Oracle now takes out OS locks on datafiles. This means that the kernel parameter NFLOCKS needs to be adjusted before the upgrade, or you could get ORA-27086 errors startup up the DB.

Unfortunately, this kernel change is NOT in the 8.1.7 HP install docs! According to the Metalink article, Oracle recommends that the param be set to 200 (the default) plus the number of "Oracle owned files for all instances". I would take this to mean datafiles, redos, max concurrent archives open, control files, init files, etc. We're gonna pad the number.

Thank Goodness it only happened on our test machine...

Enjoy!
