Ed...

Make sure you read the last couple lines of Dick's email carefully... He is absolutely correct... There is a big difference between being certified by Oracle and being certified by Oracle USING THE SUPPORTED CONFIGURATION... This is a bit of a touchy subject for me since I had several go arounds with a customer using NetApp recently... When our PS folks arrived on site, the database server was connected to the box over the LAN! Performance was horrible... It took about two hours just to issue the CREATE DATABASE statement... The customers opinion was "The NetApp filer is supported by Oracle... You must be doing something wrong..." We finally got it straight a few days later and performance has been much better... But, then we went to install it into production... The PS guys walked in and checked things out... It looked good... This time they got the dedicated connectivity correct and their sysadmins said we were all set... They started the install and again it was slow... Come to find out that even though it was a dedicated connection, they had it set at 10 Megabit!!! Just some words of warning to be careful... Make sure you understand what exactly the supported config is and spec it that way from day one...

Ed,

The answer is yes and no, or more accurately it depends. First off there
are only two storage vendors, to my knowledge, certified by Oracle for this.

They are Net Appliance and EMC. The reason is that they have software and hardware that 'guarantees' to get the data from the buffers to the drives. Secondly you need absolutely dedicated TCP/IP connectivity between the computer
and the storage array. Look at it as replacing scsi adapters and cables with
network cards and cables.

Are there any problems running Oracle on one box, and pointing the database files to a mass storage network device (ie. a disk array or some external storage solution). In other words, will Oracle run using network addressable storage? I'm assuming this is not a difficult thing to do, but I would love to hear some war stories.

Any configuration or specific recommendations on how to do this? Unix/NT an issue?

Best,

Ed
