$ sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
startup || shutdown etc

previous was brought to you by 9i the new way to shutdown/startup a database since svrmgrl is gone.

I would like to know how I go about logging on as: SQLPLUS /nolog? Is this at the initial logon or after I have logged on at the command line?
