though only applicable to Oracle 8 and higher, is a very useful tool. You can do the following:

2. Can
verify backup validity

Perform Incremental Block level backup to reduce recovery time

With Recovery Catalog in place use can store backup scripts, automate backup, etc, works with OS Medial Management Software.
