control file contents

Hello,

Out of curiosity just now, I ran "strings" on a backup of my control file. In it, there are lots of repeated references to archive log files - there are groups log file names, and the same name might appear in multiple groups. Is this a list of the redo logs that you would need to recover the database from the time of the previous backup to the time that the control file was written? Because, looking in my archive log destination, these are a lot older than the last hot backup.
