We had to do this recently.. I mean some thing similar.. This is what we have now..

Since the latest version of the db is needed for the catalog, in other words it is not upward compatible (Am I correct here ...) anyway..

The catalog db is in the latest version. which is 8.1.7.1

We have separate schemas for 816 and 817 in the db holding separate catalogs for these different versions.

While upgrading from 8.0.5 to 8i I was aware of a problem in which the upgrade catalog would not work as expected to.

Just registering the db again should work.
