    For the most part I agree, but I have also seen circumstances where a function (in my case) works very consistently for months and then goes totally south right out of the clear blue. This gets especially nerve racking when there are no indications of what the heck has happen, like no locks evident, no alert log messages, the function is still valid, etc.... I'll finally get everyone using the function to stop for a couple of moments, recompile it with no errors, and it returns back to normal. It's just like the DB makes a odd decision to do something crazy.

of optimiser stats?

Its not too uncommon for performance to suddenly go "over the edge" rather than degrade in the nice linear fashion. For example, sorts suddenly needing to go to disk - "just" not fitting into memory etc
