Alter tablespace add datafile

One of our datafiles is about to reach it's maxsize.

Is the only way around this to do an alter tablespace add datafile?

• Can the database be up and running for this?
• After I create the new datafile does this mean Oracle will automatically use the new one and leave the old one?
• Is there any other way I can get around this by not shutting down the database???
