yeah I took over code from someone like you before..... back in COBOL programming days, he had just learned COBOL and was determined to use EVERY single command.
I learned to absolutely loathe "ALTER paragraph" statements. he'd have a goto (which I already hated), and then would alter the paragraph to goto somewhere else. made debugging and making changes a nightmare.
You get to live bucko, but only 'cause you provide us with wonderful recipes :)
