Fail over with ODBC and standard edition

Do you need to have Enterprise server for the odbc fail over to work. I have standard edition on a MS cluster and the odbc connection doesn't stay connected after failover. It doesn't indicate that you need enterprise (at least not that I noticed) for this feature to work, but so far I haven't been able to find a magic combination to make it work.
