RE: Duhvelopers and DB-ehs?

The documentation that I do is one of the reasons I have had IT managers AND directors of IT often come to me and beg me to come on full time.

Went to one client as a "salvage the client" run, wrote up three notebooks of documentation. We had a mini-"Open World" in the city and my management was surprised that MANY members from the client were coming over and singing my praises. Totally floored the local office. I still touch base with one of the folks there (manager of IT who is now a consultant.)

We had one strange recovery to get back over 400+ passwords and I wrote up the whole thing and sent it to all concerned. I had one woman come to my office and stand there and say "Thank you." I asked "For what?" She said "For such an excellent write up. I understand exactly what all you had to do. I took your note to the Director and thanked him for hiring you.(as a consultant)."

It was later that the Director came down, also shook my hand thanked me, and made yet another plea for me to take one of the vacant DBA slots there.

And in that incident, I was not the primary, but just did a few of the key points and documented everything, giving credit to those who credit was due in fact saying it could have never happened as fast as it did without the help of the other consultant who was an Oracle guy, and the backup crew who were good enough to almost instantly give us the files we needed.

I got heaped praise for basically "including the working stiffs..." Plus this also served as documentation if it ever happened again.

And, just in case you wondered, I hate to document, but realize just as Rachel said, I may have to read it again some day.

Maks.
