I guess I should share my recent transition...

I escaped the Silicon Valley rat race to join Walt Weaver up here in Bozeman, Montana. (Somebody's got to keep an eye on him :-) When I was in San Jose my morning commute was a hectic, traffic congested 45 minute drive even though I left home at 6:15 a.m. in a vain attempt to beat some of the other rats in the race. The commute home could be anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and a half and you didn't dare look at anyone for fear of road rage. (I exaggerate.) Now my "commute" is about 2 miles or 3-4 minutes and I wave at the cows on the way to work. I'm planning on riding my bike to work tomorrow. Since we're on a 4X10 schedule my time away from home on a 10 hour work day is almost the same as it was in Silicon Valley for an 8 hour day but I get another entire day off to enjoy Montana.

It was even a challenge to escape the rat race in Silicon Valley. In CA my commute to Tahoe for skiing was 4-6 hours but here it's just 20 minutes so I look forward to doing lots of skiing this winter. The population for the entire state of Montana is about the same as the city of San Jose where I lived so I haven't found any rat race to compete in. Even though Montana is more sparsely populated, Bozeman is an "upscale" university town with a few high tech companies so I can still find Starbucks coffee and go to a symphony. I think it's the best of the Rocky Mountain West without the hassle of the Denver Metro area... but don't tell anyone because we need to preserve our paradise. Of course I haven't lived through an entire winter yet so feel free to ask me about my transition in February. ;-)

Jared,

I live in Galesville, WI with a population of about 500 and work in Arcadia, WI, with a population of about 2000. My place of employment has about as many employees as the town has population. Ashley Furniture is a furniture manufacturer(as if the name doesn't give it away). It's kind of cool cuz they never had a DBA before so I can kind of set my own course. Noone else here knows squat about Oracle database admin so I am kind of on my own(I did not know squat a year ago but really like working with Oracle). I live in the country and my drive to work is all country except for the last mile or so to go through Arcadia. My biggest problem on my drive is either deer(or other critters) or ice. You're in a nice area yourself!!

Dave
