I believe what was meant is having all archive logs since tablespace created, but not the datafiles.
I am going to look more into it over the weekend when I get a little break from the chaos.

Chris,
Good luck on the testing of the "new" feature that you heard about. But I
think that there needs to be some clarification stated about the
"archivelogs". IF you have ALL of the archivelogs that ever did anything
with the tables in the datafile that you delete ( I mean everything from
creation to datafile delete time) then I think that you should be able to
recreate the tables in the datafile with the archivelogs. If you only have
the updates or inserts for the tables then how are you going to recreate all
of the data and co a complete restore? What archivelogs are you going to
test with. The logs from yesterday after a backup or logs from 2 weeks ago?
I think that what you heard is not what they ment. If all you need to
recreate a datafile is the controll file and archivelogs then the backups of
today could be history. Why backup 70+ GIG of datafiles if I only have to
retain my 2 MEG of archivelogs. Please post your tests and results. ROR

I don't know much about this feature, but someone mentioned in 8.1.7 you can
recover a datafile even without a backup as long as you have a control file
that knew about it and the archive logs.
Anyone give this a try? I am going to attempt this weekend on my test box.
