I do not use the CTL extension for database control files as it is used by sql*loader control files.

I'm using dbf for all data files including data, indexes, temp or rbs. The naming of the files shows what the file contains.

I do not think different extensions could lead to problem but I would change it so the naming is consistent across all databases.
