The SQL*Plus banner will display if using 64bit. If it does not say '64bit' then it's 32bit.

Here is what I get with 9.0.1 64-bit on HP-UX:

Connected to:
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.0.1.0.0 - 64bit Production With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 9.0.1.0.0 - Production

I do not have 8.1.x in 64-bit but I think the same thing would be true there as well.
