Properly designed and configured replication environments, especially on 8i+, can handle a phenomenal transaction level. I've worked with sites that replicate 20GB+ a day and db performance is excellent. On the other hand, I've also worked with sites that were such a mess that replicating 100MB a day was an effort.

I think there's just less margin for error in designing and configuring a replication environment when you're dealing with that high a transaction load.
