I think I read once that the X$ tables correspond directly to the C structs and other data structures used by the Oracle kernel itself, or maybe that's in the murky depths one level below X$. I don't know of any situations in which it would be "safe" to attempt to manipulate them. In fact, unless you're sure what you're doing, stick to DBA_ and above! :0)
