Seema,

I also am having this exact same problem. It happened last night during the nightly backup scripts which issue a "shutdown immediate" and then I get the "Restarting dead background process EMN0" message in my <SID>Alert.log and then my database hangs. I am currently searching metastink. I did a search on "Restarting dead background process EMN0". What I am seeing is that there are other people having this problem. I had a post on this list the other day with a subject of "License high water mark" in which I thought I had a different problem.
What happened was that my DB just up and did a shutdown immediate on its own. From reading on metalink there are others that have experienced this unwanted shutdown. They all had the "Restarting dead background process EMN0" in there <SID>alert.log right before the shutdown immediate was issued.
Oracle seems to weasle out af giving any kind of answer on this exept to say to read DocID 105067.1. They do not think that the DB is shutting itself down, that it is probably some rogue network admin guy doing a shutdown. Must be NT gremlins.
Hope this helps!

Dave

EMN0 is for advanced queueing, are you using AQ or uses something that might use AQ?

Could it be that your OEM is starting the event monitor process. Just guessing ....

EMN0, of which I had never heard before, is according to V$BGPROCESS an 'even
monitor process' (guess it's a kind of sub-pmon or sub-smon). It doesn't seem
to be started by default. If I were you, I would first look in background_dump_dest for a trace, because if it died it probably didn't die

without a last phrase. If the trace file is not clear enough (likely), send it
to the Oracle Support to keep them busy and in the mean time try to find out
what makes the b*****y EMN0 start and check whether you really need it.
