Datafile Coruption

I would like to simulate the corruption and recovery of a datafile on my development database. How can I corrupt the file and initiate recovery while the database is online? I was thinking I could open the file in VI while the database had it open and append some random characters to it, but would like to hear any other suggestions others may have.

Thanks
Erik
