Rachel,

I was thinking of this as a current control file vs. backup control file kind of discussion.

In any case, the current controlfile will let you do an incomplete recovery. It's been awhile since I actually worked through all of these exercises, so I can't recall the details of the differences between the 3 different types of controfiles.

The Oracle8i version of the Backup and Recovery Handbook says that the order of preference is current, rebuild from trace file, and backup.
