You're
right.  Preparing for a dance competition IS more challenging than DB recovery - my wife and I rehearse somewhere between 400 and 600 hours/year to dance a total of maybe 45 to 90 minutes in each of our four annual competitions.   However, it's so much more satisfying!  Plus, it helps keep you sharp and in shape for those times you do have to sit at a workstation, doing recovery or some such sedentary thing.  Actually, we Jazzercise (Aerobics) about 300 hours per year just to stay in shape to rehearse!

We do
American Smooth (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz) and American Rhythm (ChaCha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Mambo).  The American Style, to us, is more fun, especially since you can do almost all the dances socially.  Not so with some of the International Style dances, such as Quick Step, Samba, and Paso Doble.  Also, IMHO, American Smooth is much harder than International Standard - the rapid changes from open to closed positions make it very difficult to do with finesse.

No,
you wouldn't want to see me shake my 50 year old bootie, though my Cuban Motion (in Rumba) *is* getting pretty good for a "Bullet-Headed Saxon Mother's Son" (extra points for whoever can name the song that phrase came from!)!  My wife's slinky and/or graceful moves keep everyone distracted from noticing my clumsier moments - she's a treat to watch!

Yep,
we're "Fred and Ginger".  She's every bit as talented as Ginger Rogers while I, unfortunately, am closer to Flintstone (or Mertz) than Astaire!  8^)

   Don't listen to
him! My wife participates in dance competitions and has "persuaded" me to join   her in taking dance lessons at a local dance studio. I would prefer having to   recover a crashed 24x7 mission critical database than have to enter a dance   competition.
Jack, do you do ballroom or latin/jive? Of course, I happen to   prefer ballroom (where you can get away with looking bored while you're   dancing) and my wife likes latin (our salsa instructor is constantly exhorting   us to "shake our booties" - trust me, you don't want to see a DBA shaking his   booty).<SPAN
