David,
I think it is because of the ksh b.ksh you execute. The ksh is looking for some place to direct the output to and you supply that with the 2>&1 command. I am only quessing that is the answer because it has been awhile since I used Unix. ROR mª¿ªm

I was hoping someone in the list might be able to help me understand why this happens.

i have a script a.ksh that looks like this a.ksh

ksh b.ksh

b.ksh

su - updater -c "/prod/exe/pos2100" 2>&1 $log1 &
su - updater -c "/prod/exe/pos2100" 2>&1 $log2 &
su - updater -c "/prod/exe/pos2100" 2>&1 $log3 &
su - updater -c "/prod/exe/pos2100" 2>&1 $log4 &
wait

when i run this only 1 of the background runs and the other 3 hang

but if i change a.ksh to this

ksh b.ksh 2>&1 /dev/null

everything works ok and all 4 jobs go into background and run fine

coudl someone tell me why this happens
