Confusion about what partition a record is stored using hash partitions

Using range partition you know exactly where the records are stored. I do not understand how one knows
where the row is stored using hash partitioning. Can the optimizer still use partitioning pruning with hash
partitions? Can someone explain how hash partitions work? My sources are confusing.
