Oracle's Max Index Size

Just want to make sure I understand this correctly:

In Oracle 8i, what is the maximum index size for a database? I found a reference that said that Oracle can handle 16 columns max for an index and a table can have any number of indexes.

I guess I was looking for hard numbers.

TIA
