Viraj:
In your case, oracle8 should be a valid UNIX user who is also the owner of your database. Is that true?
I do not know if I understand you. But I test this

su - oracle -c $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl in my system. it worked fine without asking password, instead it broght up the LSNRCTL> prompt. so. Hope you get work soon, Good luck

william,

I also dont want the user to interact, i want it to remain as a automated startup and shut down process. At this time, even if I run it as,

su - oracle8 -c $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl <<eof

the script asks for oracle8's password, which I dont want; some how I could pass the user id and password just like I can pass from a shell file to sqlplus like,

test.sh
sqlplus $USER/$PASSWD <<EOM
do what ever
EOM Then do
test.sh oracle8 passwd

so in a similar way can I pass userid and passwd, so that the shell does not ask the user the passwd when i do

su - oracle8 -c $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl <<eof

Do u understand the problem.....
