YOU, Sir, are a genius! That fixed it. I come from Oracle 6 beginnings which were more quiet, happy, times. <sigh>

Thank you so much Brian!

Years ago moving $ORACLE_HOME was nobiddeal. Today it can get you a case of heart break. It has caused so many problems for me that when I called Oracle support the person that was finally able to answered the question, spoke frankly, that it was best to install all over again.

I would assume you are causing dynamic linker errors. That is the problem when the db starts okay when running as the Oracle user but things fail when running as other users locally. Run the command "ldd -v $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle" as the Oracle user, and then as another user, you should see errors for the non oracle users. For a short term fix you will need to remake the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle executable, in the future always reinstall.

If my notes don't fail me these are the remake commands

        cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
vi $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib/nmliblist (change path as necessary)
        make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle

Hi Gang,
We have 2 Sun 4500s running Solaris 2.8 and Oracle 8.1.6. The machines are in a cluster together and all was running well until we moved $ORACLE_HOME. After doing so the database came up just fine. We are having a problem starting thedatabase with the haoracle start <SID> command. The database and listener seem to start okay but then it does a hard crash and produces a trace file from the archive process. We have edited the appropriate files to reflect the new $ORACLE_HOME and, again, everything comes up okay if we start it maunaly as the unix user Oracle.

Any ideas?
TIA,
-Rocky
