Yes, of course you can control+C and issue shutdown abort. After you do, issue startup restrict and shutdown immediate.
There's a process out there that's hanging on to it's database connection. By chance are you running OEM INtelligent Agent? Agent-type programs will make shutdown immediate impossible unless you kill these programs.

I have issued a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE on a database and it is alomost 50 minutes. The database has still nto shutdown. What cud be the problem Also i want to know if we can cancel this and give a SHUTDOWN ABORT
