Tamara,

I have been trying to "sell" the idea of remote DBA work for years but I get the same results as you. It seems that there is still an immature attitude towards the "control and supervision" of employees.

        I'm faced with the same thing! I'm in a small town in Colorado and there are so very few great (even just decent) tech jobs here. Since our company announced the closing of the Colorado office, I've been searching for anything I can do remotely or locally so I don't have to move. When I say remote DBA the doors slam closed, even with 5 years experience. On the local front, there is only SQL Server on NT (all my 5 yrs Oracle have been on Unix!), so I'm up against a similar situation, only I don't have much of a choice.

        Scott's reply makes sense... and I hope I'll be able to get back to Oracle soon.... good luck to us both!

Lisa,

In the long run it can be a good thing. If you go back to Oracle
exclusively at a later date, it'll come back pretty quickly - I know. Look
at it as expanding your skill set and becoming more marketable. The
environment counts for a lot as well.
