RE: Max length of SID in Oracle 8

Isn't it that on NT you can have only 4 character SID and in UNIX you can have more than 4 character SIDs?

We never experimented the other way around hence I don't know much more about it. But I remember running into problems on NT if we entered more than 4 character sid. (I vaguely remember that had something to do with initSID.ora file, because if you entered sid more than 4 characters, the file name of initSID.ora file will become more than 8.3 charater format and hence the problem on NT)

Regards,
Hitarth

We've been routinely using 6-8 character SIDs without any problems. This is under Oracle 8.0.x and 8.1.x for Unix and NT.

I found it in the "Getting Started" book. Max length is still 4.
