The rule based optimizer does not support bitmapped indexes see:note:1079306.6 on metalink

Sorry, didn't work with hint either.
I tried with and without statistics also. Our system is rule based.
Any other idea?

Hi Amar,

How about using a hint to force the use of the index? You could do something like:

select /*+ INDEX(am33_col1) */ * from am33

    where blah blah....

This then forces this index to be used..

Hi,
I have created a bitmap index on a table. The same query behaves differently under various optimisation modes, on 8.1.7 db

    -desc am33

 Name Null? Type
 ------------------------------- -------- ----
 COL1 NUMBER
 COL2 VARCHAR2(10)

-create bitmap index am33_col1 on am33(col1); Index created.

     -select * from am33
  2 where col1 = 1;

      COL1 COL2
__________ __________

         1 checking

I changed the optimisation mode and got the following results: RULE- full scan
CHOOSE - full scan
FIRST_ROWS - using bitmap index.
ALL_ROWS - full scan

I want to use the bitmap index for non-cost based db's. Any idea how to go about it?
Note: compatible set to 8.1.7

Thanks,
