Its mainly still there for backwards compatibility. I actually read that in one of their manuals but I can't remember which (or even the version). I personally never use it as I have seen way to much in the way coding problems then anything. I don't even care about the space issues. I just can't get past the amount of times I have watched developers struggle debugging something that was due to the extra spaces in the text.

Okay...here goes with question #1

In reading and playing with SQL*PLUS I see that there is CHAR ( text strings that are padded to the length you set) and VARCHAR2 (text strings that are not padded). My question is why would one ever use CHAR ? It seems it would require MUCH more space
