Patrice,

One of the nice things about Oracle is that although they pay homage = to the
corporate mantra, at the same time they understand the REAL WORLD. For a=  number
of years I've heard that rule based optimization & OCI were going away. = Well,
there still here & I haven't heard/read anything that says their leaving = in 9i
either. Yeah Larry E wants to become the internet company of the world, = there
was even a move afoot a year or two ago to make Oracle and the OS one and=  the
same. Died on the vine. Why? Because reality bites, the bulk of his rev= enue
comes on the back of the RDBMS one way or the other and folks use it for = more
than the internet. We've got 10+ instances here and only one has anythin= g to do
with the internet. The others support more mundane things, like an autom= ated
manufacturing line or two. So don't worry, if it comes to pass we'll all=  get
more than fair warning, but don't bet on it being to soon. What I believ= e their
trying to do is get us DBA's to use some of these new technologies so tha= t when
we do have the millions of sessions predicted we'll be ready & understand= =2E BTW:
anyone running an ASP based application on either an inter or intra net s= hould
be looking at MTS. It really does save the server some heartburn.

That's a little worrisome.

My Oracle8i instructor (the one who said he could not make MTS work) said=

that eventually, Oracle plans to phase out dedicated connections.

One student asked how this could be, it isn't possible to restart databas= es
via MTS because none of the processes are up. The instructor didn't have=  an
answer for him.

Is this a bad rumour, that Oracle will eventually drop dedicated connecti= ons
and try to get everyone to connect via MTS? Just wondering. It sounds silly but you never know.

        Patrice,

Well, I'm not using NT, but I did get MTS working on 8 & 8.1.=
6
on HP-UX. =

Works just fine, but there are potential performance problems. I=

would NOT

recommend it to anyone where your end users are blasting large amounts of data

or SQL at the server. It is great for applications where you hav= e
lots of user

sessions, small amounts of SQL & data being processed/transferred=

like an OLTP

        environment.

Maybe someone has managed to make it work, but during my Oracle 8=
i
Upgrade

course the instructor mentioned that he never managed to make MTS=

work in

Oracle7, and in 8i he couldn't make it work either.

I installed 8.1.6. on a test server here, I spent about a day try= ing
to

connect to it remotely, finally I put (server=3Ddedicated) in my tnsnames.ora

file and surprise, all the problems went away. I am almost using=

the very

same configuration that we are using for Oracle7, except for the
listener.ora file where SID has been replaced by SERVICE_NAME.

During that day I tried to understand the info on how to configur=
e
MTS for

8i, but the examples never seemed to quite fit my situation - whi= ch
is very

simple: I want my users to be able to connect, and I want to be able to use

MTS server-side. We are using TCP/IP, and my test server here is=  an
NT

machine. If connection pooling and multiplexing works, all the better, but

after a day of tweaking those .ora files the ability for clients = to
connect

became a lot more important than those other improvements to MTS.=

If someone has managed to make MTS work properly in 8.1.6, I woul= d
like to

        hear about that.

Does that mean even after configuring MTS .. the connecti=
on
should
        be
                dedicated ?

Can anyone highlight the benefits of MTS with Shared
Connection /
        MTS with
                Dedicated Connection and
                simple dedicated connected without MTS.

What would be the best situation to configure MTS. (Only
more
        numbers of
users with less I/O to server etc.)

                TIA
