If this is 8i and on NT, there is a directory under Oracle home called database, there is an init file in there that points to the init.ora file in the pfile folder. If you don't change the name there it won't start. Kev

Have you tried to start up using the pfile option?

  SQL>startup pfile=PATH/init.ora

Are there any errors in the alert log, or any errors accompanying this error? There should be more information in the error stack..

  HTH   Mark

    Hi,

I created a database using DB CreateAssistant. Then I went to the pfile where the init.ora is placed. I renamed the filename and after sometime renamed it back to original. But it seems like it is not taking/reading that file.

I get ORA-01078 failure in processing system     parameters

    Kindly help.

    Sanjay
