I had good luck in setting up MTS for a test env in Solaris7,Oracle 8.1.5. 
It worked okay woth setting 10 dispatchers and all those fun stuff.
Oracle rep told me that MTS is advisable only you can  not add system 
resources to add the dedicated connections, in other words, when the number 
of user connections exceed the system resource limit such as setting  
process parm etc.
