Larry,

How do you limit these dedicated processes:

  1. set up the multi threaded server (MTS) that way they go away all together. Although this does work, MTS has it's own drawbacks, like having too few shared servers which causes a performance problem.
  2. which user, inside the database, is causing the problem? Check the username column of V$SESSION to find out. Does this user have unlimited # of sessions in their profile? If so you can change that to something reasonable, like 50. Also do they have unlimited idle time, consider changing that to say 5 minutes.
  3. lastly, assuming it's a WEB application with IIS, ASP, and ODBC find the developer & bring it to his/her attention and add their boss into the conversation too. Many times with these types of individuals they 1) don't know their doing anything out of the ordinary in the first place, and 2) they assume the database is strictly for their use & they can do what they want. If they are given an understanding of the problem most, although not all, are willing to look into the problem & find a solution.

Been there, done all of that, and now have a happy relationship with the WEB folks. BTW: In most circumstances you are the only one who knows what is going on & handing over OEM & DBA privileges is not a viable option. Therefore, pay a visit to www.luminate.com. Download a copy of MAMBA. It's FREE, runs on Windows NT/2000, comes complete and is WEB based & is a READ-ONLY tool. Perfect for allowing a WEB developer to see what he/she is doing to the database & even helping them understand which ASP page is causing the problem. WARNING: be prepared to do a lot of hand holding at first & enjoy some real benefits in the end.

these are delicated process. So the maximum amount you can have subject to the PROCESSES parameter you set in the init.ora file. A larger number of PROCESSES will definitely buy you more time.

But I don't think there is any way you can limit the number of these connections.

Those are the processes for people who logon to your database through sqlnet. For example, when you use your PC sqlplus to logon to your database, there will be such a section in your server.

Does anyone know why so many of these Oracle processes named (LOCAL=NO) have suddenly shown up? So many in fact, I can't bring up SVRMGR until I kill them, but they keep coming back!
