Shiva,

Make sure you are using Server Manager to startup/shutdown instance and not sqlplus.

go to the dos prompt
set ORACLE_SID=nameofyourinstance

svrmgrl    ------ (Server Manager executable for Oracle 8i)
           ------  If you are using Oracle 8 try svrmgr80
           ------  If you are using Oracle 7.3 try svrmgr23
connect internal
startup pfile=d:\orant\database\initSID.ora This should startup the instance and open the database.

hi all,

happy new year 2001
Thanx in advance.Iam facing one problem. i have created one new database thru database assistanct. but iam not able to able to startup,mount and open the database. if i try to start,mount and open the database. its giving me the error as shutdown the oracle instance already running. can any one help me in this regard.and iam facing another problem.. when i was trying to connect thru oracle client, iam getting the error as adapter error 63.
