Deciphering DUNS numbers

Happy Holidays folks,

I've got a requirement to build a family "tree" - basically a list of Corporate branches/subsidiaries/divisions - based on the DUNS number. There was an article in the old Database magazine in 1993 on how to decipher the DUNS numbers to acheive this goal, but issues prior to 1995 are not available on-line. I've sent an e-mail to D&B ("inventor" of the DUNS system), but have not received a response as yet. Has anyone else faced a similar task?
