I just looked on metalink and found a pretty good article on this problem.

I looked at it and it sounds like there were some bugs with nameing the sid's in 8.0.5. They also recommend looking at the registry to make sure that it is pointing to the correct init file and pfile. I guess it sounds like it could be a registry problem, it's strange to me that you can start it manually. Here's a question, if you go into servermanager can you start it from there as well as from NT services?

I should have mentioned I can start the instance manually which implies it is not a memory issue.
