Fred,

Oracle automatically updates the control files as necessary (as a matter of fact they are stored in binary and ONLY Oracle itself can edit them). HOWEVER, I would BACK-up your controlfiles whenever you do your regular backups AND whenever you make a significant change to the structure of your db.

Subject: Control Files Question - PLEASE HELP

Hi List,

I want to konw when I need to re-create my control files. If I add a tablespace to my database or add a datafile to one of my existing tablespaces do I need to re-create my controlfiles ... or are they automatically updated to reflect the change to my database structure???

I know I need multiple copies of the control file on different spindles, etc.,... but I want to make sure that they are up to date. (I just added a new tablespace to my database).

Thank you!!!!
  -Fred Smith
