You may wish to look at the "compress" option that is available for any file or folder on an NTFS volume. Additionally, there are various NT ports to be found on the Internet of the *nix commands such as tar and gzip that could be used in the same fashion that they're used on a Unix machine, though many of them aren't nearly as fast as their native Unix counterparts.
