Large sga

Has anyone had positive/negative experiences with a rather large sga? We have a box with 12GB of free ram, and have recently upgraded to Oracle 8.1.6 64-bit to take advantage of the larger sga that it can handle (we are looking at bumping it to between 6GB and 8GB).

However, as with any production change, I have some trepidation that we are embarking on another entomology expedition :)

Background is the database is a somewhat large (500GB) information warehouse housed on a HP-UX 11.00 v2500 box w/ 10 processors and 12GB of ram (and,as mentioned, Oracle 8.1.6.0.0 64-bit) running on an EMC raid setup.

Any input/anecdotes would be appreciated.

Cheers,
GC
