Thats the trick. Thanks very much, I was using rowids and all sorts. Much simpler. I actually pared it down to merely

select distinct e.segment_name, f.file_name FROM DBA_EXTENTS E , DBA_DATA_FILES F WHERE E.FILE_ID = F.FILE_ID Thanks again
