Thank you very much for your suggestion. Although you would have thought that I would check for a duplicate entry, and I thought I did, I tried it again. Today I checked with "grep -i remote_login_passwordfile init*.ora". Sure enough, there was another entry at the bottom of the file. I suppose I was preoccupied with other things.

Is this parameter file sharing by any other process, like RMAN or something then you need to bounce both and make sure there is no duplicate entry in parameter file.
