Hi John,

They are synonyms, the same thing. Oracle 8i is a common name for 8.1.5 and 8.1.6(Oracle 8i Rel2).
They are both support Java.
If you are going to use Java, try to avoid 8.1.5, because this version has a weak java support. It's better to use 8.1.6. I've heard that 8.1.7 (now available under Solaris) has some advantages in terms of java performance.
