Hi Larry,

This number is directly affected by the number of semaphores available on your system. When you start up a database, it checks to see if there is at least the number of sems available as the number of max processes you are defining. If there isn't, it won't start. If you have other databases on the same host, be sure your total # of sems is greater than the sum of all the processes parms defined in all your init.ora's.

As far as performance metrics... I can't speak to that, except, well do you really want 800 concurrent connections to your database??? If I ever get to that point I am going to implement MTS because it's going to be a nightmare when it does happen. I simply don't have the resources to support that kind of workload. Yet.

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me, how does the PROCESS parameter in the init.ora file affect the performance of the database. I can't seem to find any good information
in the 8.1.6 documentation.

Database is MTS configured.

My 8.1.6 database init.ora has the following options:

#processes = 50                                                        #
SMALL
# processes = 100                                                     #
MEDIUM
#processes = 200                                                     # LARGE

processes = 800

What I have noticed is that, my database will not startup if the process value is greater
than 800.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
